SooBluu the Sea Turtle: a remarkable rescue.
A Wounded Sea Turtle
Yesterday, Martine and I had a special moment during our visit to Local Ocean Conservation (LOC). Just as we arrived, a wounded large sea turtle was brought in. It was a heartbreaking sight: a beautiful turtle with a deep wound on her neck, caused by a fishing hook. Such an impressive creature, but at the same time so vulnerable.
The First Care by Local Ocean Conservation
With great care, the turtle was lifted from the vehicle and brought to LOC’s clinic. An impressive process followed: everything was measured, checked, and recorded. And just like all patients, this turtle was given a name. To our surprise, she was named ‘SooBluu’ – a name that perfectly suits her, and one that we naturally feel an extra special connection to.
Although her injury is severe, SooBluu shows resilience. She moves a lot and splashes around in her new bath. That gives hope! The LOC team is doing everything they can to provide her with the best care, hoping that she will recover quickly enough to be released back into the ocean.
Treatment by the Veterinarian
In the evening, the veterinarian came to assess her deep wound, which is about 10 cm long. A small surgery or stitching will likely follow to aid her recovery. Hopefully, this will help her recover faster and return to the ocean.
Why This Matters
This encounter reminded us once again of how fragile life in the ocean is. Plastic pollution, fishing nets, and other human activities put these magnificent creatures in danger every day. Fortunately, there are organizations like LOC that are dedicated to their protection and recovery.
How You Can Help
We will visit SooBluu again this week and hope she recovers soon. Her story is a reminder of why we do what we do at SooBluu: contributing to a cleaner ocean and protecting marine life.
Want to help too? Support initiatives like @localoceanco and make conscious choices to reduce plastic pollution. Additionally, by purchasing a SooBluu travel towel or beach bag, you directly contribute to less plastic in the ocean. Together, we can make a difference – for SooBluu and all the other marine animals who need our help.
